The Art of Preserving Berries
There are several ways to extend the shelf life of berries during their peak season.
In the fridge
The best place to store fresh berries is in the refrigerator. But be careful! It’s best to keep them in a closed container with a cloth or paper towel at the bottom to absorb excess moisture. Also, to make them last longer, avoid washing them before storing!
In the freezer
To freeze berries properly, start by spreading them out on a baking sheet so they don’t stick together. Place the sheet in the freezer for a few hours until the berries are firm. Once frozen, transfer them to an airtight container, removing as much air as possible.
But that’s not all!
With a home dehydrator (or an appliance that has this function), you can dehydrate berries for a healthy, flavorful snack.
Despite your best efforts, your berries have started to spoil? Don’t worry—just blend them with a bit of maple syrup to make a delicious coulis to pour over yogurt or ice cream. Success guaranteed!
